The Smith-Jenkins Legacy Scholarship at Stark College & Seminary is reserved for the student or adjunct faculty who shows unusual promise for future success despite their difficult and usual circumstances.
Jack Castleton Smith was born in 1902 and only completed a 7th grade education. Determined not to let his lack of education hold him back, he ultimately earned a master’s degree and became a successful elementary school principal in the San Antonio ISD. Smith was renowned for his love of nature, storytelling, and fiction. Passing this love onto his granddaughters became a goal as he read and told stories to them. Smith also coined several family adages that communicated the values and behaviors expected of his family.
Likewise, Calib Lee Jenkins was born in 1904 and grew up across the lake from New Orleans, Louisiana. Jenkins made his way in life by operating the only ship building crane in the area. His expertise earned him the unique distinction of having the first automobile in town, where he used the car to the benefit of the community regardless of color or creed. Together, Smith and Jenkins infused four values into their grandchildren: God, Family, Hard work, and Education.
The successful recipient of the Smith-Jenkins Legacy Scholarship is someone who strives to better themselves through education and hard work regardless of his or her background.
