“The Journey”

I love to look back at the road that led me to Stark. I see God’s faithfulness, I see God’s grace, I see God’s hand in all of it. From my childhood experiences in the Lutheran church where I grew up serving, to F.C.A. where I was exposed to a powerful form of worship, to a class called “The Rise of Christianity” that I took while at the University of Texas, to a Presbyterian seminary, and finally across the nation to Regent University, where I encountered the Holy Spirit in the most life-changing way. Each of these experiences were carefully crafted, meticulously planned, and so lovingly marked for me by God. I see now so clearly how the Lord orchestrated the journey and how each step of obedience led me to Stark.
When I was first interviewed by our Provost, Dr. Jena Dunn, I remember her asking about my calling and what I desired most from serving at SCS. I felt called to teach and help equip leaders in the church as well as serve the community in which I grew up. I knew there was a need in South Texas for quality, accredited theological education from a practical perspective that could be taken straight into the church. On that providential day,I learned from Dr. Dunn what SCS was all about and I knew that this was the place where the Lord had led me.
SCS embodies my heart, my hope, and my passion for theological education. Stark cares so deeply about providing a quality education for those who might otherwise not have an opportunity to attend seminary. Accessibility, both because of location and the cost of our courses, allow students to obtain a degree in higher education without having to relocate or incur debt. Stark’s heart for the local church, as well as simply loving students like Jesus, is a mark of this unique institution. Everything done here is for the advancement of God’s kingdom.
It is a blessing to be a part of the equipping process both in and out of the classroom. It brings me joy to love and mentor students, to be an encouragement, to affirm one’s calling, and to be the person who gets to tell a student (often for the first time) that they should consider graduate school because they have a gift.
My journey has been long and challenging, but everything has happened in the Lord’s perfect timing. Living out your calling is sometimes arduous, sometimes sacrificial, but always worth it. There is peace in knowing that you are right where the Lord has led you, doing exactly what He has purposed for your life.
