Self Symposium Keynote Speaker: Dr. Ellis Orozco

Home 9 Uncategorized 9 Self Symposium Keynote Speaker: Dr. Ellis Orozco

At this year’s Rev. Linn and Betty Self Bible Symposium, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about “Spiritual Care for the Bereaved” from Dr. Ellis Orozco. Dr. Orozco is the senior pastor of First Baptist Church, Richardson and has served in ministry for over 30 years.

Dr. Orozco was born in Pasadena, Texas. He was active in his church, Templo Bautista, South Houston since birth. After graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M in 1986, he moved back to Houston where he worked as an engineer and volunteered as the youth director at Templo Bautista. “Through that youth ministry experience, I felt called into full time ministry,” Dr. Orozco tells us.

In 1989, he answered the call to ministry and began pursuing a Master of Divinity at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. During his time at seminary, he worked at the Psychiatric Institute of Fort Worth serving adolescents. He also served as a Youth Minister at Primera Iglesia Bautista, Fort Worth and Iglesia Bautista Getsemani. He met his wife Priscilla at Primera Iglesia Bautista, and the two have been married since 1991. He later earned the Doctor of Ministry at George W. Truett Theological Seminary in 2004.

With a long history of serving various churches around Texas, Dr. Orozco brings a pastoral component to this year’s topic. “Grief is a natural and integral part of life. It impacts every human life. It is impossible to minister to human beings without encountering the effects of grief,” he shares. The sessions he will lead are entitled: “A Theology of Grief” and “Stories from Grief: Introspection and Praxis.”
