“I had great plans to publish papers after I got my doctorate, but Hurricane Harvey changed all that,” shares visiting lecturer, Dr. Scott Jones. “I have spent the past year and a half putting all my ideas and experiences to work in my own church, First Baptist Church in Rockport, as we continue to help our community recover from the storm.”

Dr. Jones earned a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in Speech at Howard Payne University, a Master of Divinity with Biblical Languages from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and his Ph.D. in Pastoral Leadership from B. H. Carroll Theological Institute. “My primary interest is in how leadership occurs within complex adaptive human systems. Specifically, I am interested in how churches and other organizations change, adapt, grow, and transform, and the role that leaders, especially pastors, have in that process,” shares Dr. Jones.

Not only is he putting his ideas to work through his church and in the rebuilding of their community, he is also putting his expertise to work in the classroom. Dr. Jones is currently teaching a class entitled Foundations of Leadership. “I have a love for learning, and I am a big believer in preparation for ministry,” he says. “It is an honor to help students learn and be obedient to all the varied ministry settings to which God calls them.”

Outside of SCS, you can find Dr. Jones serving as the Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church in Rockport and traveling and playing games with his family. “I enjoy watching Bob Ross paint probably more than a normal human being should,” confesses Dr. Scott Jones.  He is also trying to dedicate more time to growing things, creating things, repairing things, and building things.
